How to Climb Out of Gold in League of Legends

Gold is where most players stop improving. Not because the games get harder, but because the thing that carried you out of Silver stops working. Better mechanics than the lobby is enough below Gold. From Gold up, most of your opponents can hit their skillshots too, and the games are decided somewhere else.

Almost every Gold player we coach is losing games for the same handful of reasons, and none of them are mechanical. That is the expensive part. You can spend a whole season grinding mechanics while the games are decided by four or five decisions you make on autopilot, which is why the rank holds even as the mechanics improve.

You are playing too many champions

The most common pattern in a Gold OP.GG is fifteen champions across a hundred games. Every one of them is played at roughly the same middling level, because none has had enough repetitions to become automatic.

Champion mastery is not really about the champion. It is about how much of your attention the champion uses. When you know your cooldowns, your power spikes and your wave or clear patterns without thinking, you get that attention back and spend it on the map. When you are still working out whether you win the trade, there is nothing left over.

Pick two champions in your role. A comfort pick, and one that covers a matchup or team need the first cannot. Play those until they are boring. Boring is the point.

You die for things that are not worth dying for

Look at your last ten deaths. Not the fights you lost, the deaths themselves. Ask what you were trying to get, and whether you got it.

Most Gold deaths fall into a few buckets: a solo kill attempt that did not need to happen, a fight taken because it was there rather than because it won something, a recall skipped for one more wave, or a facecheck into a bush that had no reason to be empty. In each case the reward was small and the cost was a full death timer plus whatever the enemy took with the time.

You do not need to play passively. You need to be able to name what the death bought you. If you cannot, that is the habit to fix.

Your first ten minutes are on autopilot

Ask a Gold player why they pushed a wave and the honest answer is usually that it was there. Waves are the most controllable thing in the game and the most ignored.

You do not need deep wave theory to gain from this. You need three things: whether you want the wave pushing toward you or away, why, and what you will do with the time that decision creates. A wave slow pushing into you is protection while you back. A wave crashing into their tower is permission to move to your jungler. Neither is automatically right. What is wrong is not choosing.

You have no win condition

By fifteen minutes you should be able to say in one sentence how your team wins this specific game. Not “get fed”. Something like: our jungler is ahead and their bot lane cannot contest dragon, so we group for the third one. Or: I lose late, so I need my tower and a fight before their carry has three items.

Without that sentence you are reacting to whatever appears on your screen. That is what most Gold games are. Two teams of five reacting, and the win going to whoever reacted better.

You never watch your own games

Almost nobody in Gold reviews. It is the highest value habit available to you and it costs nothing.

You do not need to watch a full VOD. Open a game you lost, jump to your first death, and watch the sixty seconds before it. Not the death. The minute that made it possible. That is where the mistake actually is, and it is nearly always a decision rather than an execution.

Do that for three games and you will see the same setup repeating. That repeat is your climb.

Three rules for the next twenty games

Pick one thing, not five. The players who climb fastest work on a single habit at a time.

  1. Two champions, twenty games, no exceptions. Play them until they are boring. Boring means cooldowns and power spikes are automatic, and the attention that frees up is what you spend on the map.
  2. Name what a fight wins before you take it. A tower, a dragon, a recall you deny. If you cannot finish the sentence, the fight is not there and the death timer is.
  3. Write one line after every loss. What was my win condition, and when did I stop playing to it. Three losses is usually enough for the same sentence to turn up twice.

None of this is fast. Climbing out of Gold is not one insight, it is removing the four or five decisions you make on autopilot every game. But it is learnable, and it is the part almost nobody works on, which is exactly why it is where the LP is.

But my teammates decide my games

In any single game, sometimes they do. Over a hundred games they do not, and the proof is that the four habits above are all things nobody else can do for you. Your champion pool is yours. Your deaths are yours. Whether you can name a win condition at fifteen minutes is yours.

The useful version of this thought is narrower and true: you cannot control the game you are in, so control the only input that carries across all of them. Players who climb out of Gold are not luckier with teammates. They are simply making fewer free mistakes, so the games that were coinflips stop being coinflips.

From the coach

When someone brings me a Gold account, I am not looking for the deaths. I am looking for the minute before them, because that is where the decision was made, and once a player can see their own pattern there the climb usually takes care of itself.

If you want someone to find your specific pattern rather than the general ones, your first session is free: a coach reads your OP.GG and goes through one of your games with you, live, with no card required.

Want this looked at in your own games?

A coach will find the pattern in one review, not ten.
